Movement Week 5

“A body at motion stays in motion... if you want to keep living, keep moving!"

— Sir Isaac Newton/Louis Alley

The well-known statement by Sir Isaac Newton concerning the first law of motion is familiar to many; however, I recently encountered its lesser-known second part.  It was written by Louis “Lou” E. Alley, 76, professor emeritus in the University of Iowa Department of Physical Education. It was exactly the point I wanted to make as the final chapter of focus for this month of movement.

The American Heart Association reports that we move 150 minutes per week. This is also the recommended amount of exercise time for a physical education class or recess for students, in New Jersey.  We know there are 10,080 minutes in a week, including sleeping time. 150 minutes seems like a very small percentage of our week.  What are we doing the rest of the time?  Probably sitting. My thoughts for this week were simple, make movement the priority for your life. The benefits are real, and you will be able to move more functionally throughout your day as a result. Keep in mind that our daily chores are movement. The tasks of lifting, carrying, climbing, bending and reaching will become easier.

The other important factor is that we will learn to appreciate needed rest periods. After a yoga class we do a practice called shavasana. You lie on your back and let go, there may be calming music, silence, or a guided meditation.  Ancient yogis meditated after yoga asana practice to transition from physical activity to deep inner stillness, using poses to prepare the body and mind for meditation. This is also a reward you can give yourself after you move. 2 – 5 minutes of allowing the body to restore and the mind to clear. Move then find restful meditation, your body and mind will thank you!
