Disconnect to Reconnect Week 3

“Connection gives purpose and meaning to our lives.”

- Brené Brown

Remember the old days when you made eye contact during a conversation? Before handheld devices distracted people. It seems that the art of connecting has been lost or is at the very least hiding. While some attribute disconnection to COVID, others used the time to learn new skills, launch businesses, or improve their health. They thrived, and flourished. They saw the separation from the outside world—apart from online—as an opportunity not a crisis.  In order to do this they took the step of focusing inward. And others who were successful utilized what resources were available and connected online.

Brene Brown’s quote reminds us how critical it is to find meaning in our lives and that connection can guide us. Last week we explored gaining more insight into self, by first giving yourself the time to reflect and be present without distractions. Reconnecting with yourself. This week we move towards others. How can you be more connected to your family, friends, colleagues and even acquaintances? Steps forward would be to first see each person, to listen with your whole self, to offer support and validation. It doesn’t have to be a “big” thing, it can be as simple as actually asking how people are, in a manner that shows you are interested in their answer. Calling someone just to say hello, I was thinking about you. Then notice how it is an opening to learn something more about this person. Notice how you feel to begin a circle of connection, where giving and receiving become second nature. Creating more meaning in your own life.
