Rest - Week 3

“Slow is smooth and smooth is fast”

- Navy Seals

If one of the world’s most highly trained teams embraces slowing down and staying present, what can the rest of us learn from that approach? Focusing on one task at a time is a form of mental rest. When we constantly multitask, we often accomplish less and make more mistakes, costing us time and energy. It is mentally draining.

This week, notice how present you are during everyday activities. Begin with a familiar task, such as brushing your teeth: pay attention to each tooth, the taste of the toothpaste, and the feel of the brush. If you often enter a room and forget why, repeat your intention to yourself, for example, “I’m going to the kitchen to get the scissors.” Presence takes practice, and developing it offers valuable mental rest. Meditation trains the mind to remain more aware of the present moment, even when we are not meditating.
