Calm Week 4

“To be calm is the greatest achievement of the self.”

-Zen proverb

What is the value of learning to calm ourselves? Some results are that we can make better decisions, handle difficult situations with more clarity, and find more joy in our lives. Another benefit is when we are calm, those around us are impacted. Consider a crisis in the classroom, the composed teacher will know that overreacting will cause chaos with the students. If the teacher is calm, the students will be more likely to follow that lead.

Everyone must find their own road to Calm. Here are some additional researched techniques:

Deep breathing

Meditation

Exercising or just moving!

Focus on your breathing

Yoga

Progressive muscle relaxation

Take a walk

Visualization

Mantras and affirmations

Write it down

Practice mindfulness, be in the present

Spend time in nature

Begin by selecting the ones that resonated with you, as you read them. The key is consistency. As with any practice, enjoy the doing, not just the goal of the outcome. When our “goal “is only the outcome we may not be as consistent with the practice. Or we stop because we think we have achieved the goal. When the practice is of high importance it becomes a natural part of our life.
