Renewal Week 2

"Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams, who looks inside awakens."

Goethe

This week we turn from the outward focus of nature’s renewal to an inward look at our own personal renewal. As nature awakens, we can reflect on our lives.  Instead of merely moving from one activity to the next, never taking time to reflect on what is or is not working, we can learn to determine what needs to change. The following is a visualization that allows the mind to daydream. When used positively, daydreaming can boost creativity and problem-solving skills, offer time for self-reflection and planning, support emotional regulation, and help process experiences with mental "do-overs."

We will begin a visualization process to encourage daydreaming. Close your eyes, take a 4-count inhale through your nostrils, then release for 6-8 counts through your nostrils. Take at least two more breaths in this fashion.

Once you are aware of your stillness within, imagine you are sitting on a puffy cloud. As you float on this cloud, notice the feeling of freedom, of letting go. Perhaps you are more aware of your senses. You may feel the warmth of the sun on your face. Take a few minutes to daydream. Whenever you are ready, open your eyes and write down whatever comes to mind.

The next time you are waiting at the doctor’s office, find a lull of activity at work, or just need a minute to refresh your mind try this again. The more you practice you will begin to activate fresh ideas and stimulate your own creativity. You will also begin the skill of self-reflection.
