Renewal Week 1
“There is symbolic as well as actual beauty in the migration of the birds, the ebb and flow of the tides, the folded bud ready for the spring. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature - the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after the winter.”
― Rachel Carson, The Sense of Wonder, winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom
Carson’s quote is central to our understanding of renewal. This first week, we start with a broad look at renewal that is all around us. In nature. Where do we fit in the realm of nature? Research tells us that being in nature decreases stress and increases creativity. In one study, even viewing scenes of nature lit up the empathy part of the brain in participants. Recognizing our place within nature is fundamental to creating sustainable practices that balance our human needs with the preservation of our resources. We act within nature, but nature also profoundly shapes human development, culture, and health, requiring a conscious effort towards our coexistence. It is our choice to take advantage of all that nature has to offer us.
Green spaces encourage outside activities promoting a
healthier lifestyle. This week, even if you live in a cold
climate, reconnect with nature. No matter where you live—
by the ocean, mountains, or inland. Find what
inspires you and then appreciate the cycle of growth.
