Contentment Week 3
“Be content with what you have;
rejoice in the way things are.
When you realize there is nothing lacking,
the whole world belongs to you.
-Lao Tzu
Lao Tzu, was a Chinese philosopher and writer credited with founding Taoism. He is traditionally believed to have lived in the 6th century BCE, though some scholars debate his historical existence. According to Wikipedia, he is the reputed author of the Tao Te Ching, a foundational text of Taoism. Lao Tzu's teachings emphasize living in harmony with the Tao (or Dao), which is often translated as "the Way" or the natural order of the universe.
So, what is Tao or the Way and how can a 6th century philosopher have relevance to us in 2025? The teachings emphasize the importance of living in harmony with nature. Research today informs us that when we spend time in nature, we raise our serotonin levels, and balance circadian rhythm. The philosophy emphasizes the acceptance of the unknown, and the ever- changing nature of life. Today, when we ask ourselves why this is happening for me, instead of to me, we empower ourselves. We can find meaning and purpose in challenging experiences, fostering personal growth and increased well-being. Finally, the teachings promote a simple, humble lifestyle, free from excessive desires and attachments.
The first step in adopting a mindset of contentment is by allowing ourselves to recognize how much we already have. Then take a step back to a simpler existence, seek the balance of nature, manifest gratitude, practice humility, and cultivate harmony with yourself and others.
